Irene Cara

‘Remember my name, Fame!, I want to live forever, I want to learn how to fly’… unless you have been living under a rock, you will know this iconic song from the smash hit musical Fame!. Irene Cara is known for her starring role as Carmen in the musical, and made this song as famous as it is today. Of course she then went on to record the Flashdance soundtrack, and other great scores.
I didn’t really know that she had did live performances, until a friend of mine said that she was playing at a venue near to our home town. I’m a massive fan of the classic 80s soundtracks, so thought it was worth going to check it out. It really was!! As well as singing the hits such as What a Feeling, she also covered some songs from lesser known soundtracks that she’d featured on, and even sang one of her own songs!
Although these songs were recorded by Cara years ago now, her voice is well preserved, and holds the same power and control that it did back in the day. Her stage presence was wonderful, and you could definitely tell that she was an actress the way that she carried herself and the confidence she maintained. Although she’s probably not an artist that would pop right into your head to go and watch, I’d definitely recommend it for the perfect combination of nostalgia and talent.
