Born in a mountain town in deepest Arizona with a population of 5’000, Zella Day started playing the guitar when she was 9 years old and began to write songs only a few short years afterwards. Soon, music took over her life and there was nothing more she wanted than to be a musician full time. Fortunately, her parents supported her ambitions and she moved from her hometown of Pinetop to Los Angeles, California, where she began gigging and scouting for contacts. However, her breakthrough came not through finding the right manager, or the right label, but a YouTube video she posted of her covering The White Stripes’ “Seven Nation Army” in 2012. The video was blogged about extensively, and two years later, Day had enough momentum to release of her first single, the critically acclaimed “Sweet Ophelia”.
Ever since then, Zella Day has continued to release hugely acclaimed singles and a succesful E.P in the form of October 2014’s self-titled effort. She may not have many releases to her name, but when critics are comparing you to the likes of Lana Del Rey and Lykke Li this early on, the sky is very much the limit. For arriving fully formed with a sound that’s unmistakeably hers, Zella Day comes highly recommended.

Listening to fusions of music form a variety of genres is always exciting, as you never know what you’re going to get, and Zella Day’s combination of folk, country, and pop creates a great sound that ranges from upbeat tracks, to relaxed ballads. Her support act was a little more mainstream and poppy, but did a great job at getting the audience excited for the show, and by the time the lights went out in preparation for Day’s entrance, everyone was screaming in excitement.
She humbly made her way centre stage with her guitar slung over her back and after smiling at us all in the crowd, she launched straight into East of Eden, which had everyone cheering like crazy right from the start. Throughout the set, she did a really good job of briefly explaining to the crowd what her motivations were behind each track, and where the lyrics originated from, and it was great to hear that first hand from her.
She played a great selection of tracks of her own, as well as a few covers, and her vocal and guitar performances were spot on all night. Zella played for almost 2 hours and maintained great energy throughout. The show was fantastic, and I’d definitely recommend seeing her live.
I've been to a moderate amount of concerts in my life (10 or 12), and I've seen some very good bands, but this may just have been my favorite. The small venue, her stage presence and the beauty of her music all combined to make this an amazing experience. I've been a fan of her's for over a year now, so finally being able to see her live, and for only $20 at that was absolutely amazing. Hypnotic is one of the best songs I've ever heard live, and ending on Mustang Kids was a fantastic way to finish the concert. I had an amazing time, and would recommend both the venue and the artist to anyone!
Zella Day is phenomenal live, if you listen to her music on yt or spotify and you're impressed, trust me she's 10 times better LIVE! I've never felt so absorbed in any sort of performance as i did during her show, she engages with the crowd and has such a a beautiful presence and elegance about the way she moves on stage while projecting such a captivating voice that you're completely immersed in.
Just so beautiful and incredible, i still can't believe she was only 10metres away from me. so much love for this artist right here.
It was an amazing experience! Great people, great venu, amazing music, and a lot of energy! One criticism I would give is that it should more clear of what time the show starts, because many people in the audience were complaining because they thought it started at 7:00, which was when the gate opened, so we were standing in the audience until 8:30 (which was when the set started). But other than it was an unforgettable night!
Zella Day was amazing. She was so interactive with the crowd and her band was amazing they all had good chemistry with each other. She even brought up her little sister who was in the mustang kids video on stage. She also let so people in the crowd up too. She was so close to the whole audience as well. She sang and looked great.
Zella was absolutely amazing!! The energy was great, and the whole crowd was having a great time. Because there weren't any openers, the concert wasn't very long-- started at 8:30 (doors opened at 7) and we were out of there by 10. U St Music Hall is also a fantastic venue:) I would definitely go to see Zella Day perform again.
Fucking awesome. Really. She had a great vibe and an overall grand presence. She sounds great live and had fun with the audience. The venue I saw her in is on the smaller side, and she managed to make it feel even smaller by really bringing the audience in. Her opening acts, Hawai and Max & the moon, were good too.
zella put on a great show! the crowd was very nice aside from a few loud drunk people in front of me, but even then it was amusing to hear him screaming for her. during the final song in the encore she brought up her sister and some people from the crowd and it was really great.
Zella Day was absolutely amazing and beautiful! She has an a this energy and charisma that just captivates. Beautiful talented artist. I'm so glad I had the opportunity to see her before she goes big time. Seeing her at a small intimate venue like the Rebel Lounge was perfect!
She was absolutely amazing live! She told us she was sick, but man she could've fooled me. The atmosphere was great and her stage presence was fenominal. So much good about this young lady. I'm excited to see how big she gets!!! Keep it up Zella, we all love you. <3
