In 1988, Heights Guitar owner Jim Mendenhall purchased the former Leola's Steakhouse from Leola Frankel of Frankel's Costume Company to establish a live music venue. Soon the bar became a favorite place for those looking for solid Rock, Blues, Roots, Country, and more original, live music. The oldest blues jam in Houston started at Dan's in December, 1988 and has had as guests Tab Benoit, Greg Allman, Billy Gibbons, and Richard Gere, among others. After 16 years, he sold Dan Electro's to Bob Edwards. Booking the best local, regional, and National and International touring bands; Dan's has become internationally known as a place where anyone can relax or dance in a comfortable atmosphere with good music. Some of the International artists who have played here are: Big Sam's Funky Nation, Uncle Lucious, Carolyn Wonderland, Joe "King" Corasco, John Nemeth, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Billy Joe Shaver, Marcia Ball, Sunset Heights, Kellie Rucker, Chris Duarte, Bernard Allison, Lightnin' Malcolm, Teresa James, Pete Anderson, C.J. Chenier, Curtis Salgado, Helle's Belle's, Trailer Choir, Guy Forsyth, Moreland & Arbuckle, Vallejo, Keith Anderson, Bob Margolin, Lil Brian & The Travelers, Ana Popovic, Keith Harkin, Gourds, Del Castillo, Tommy Castro, Lil' Ed, Guitar Shorty, Shovels & Rope, Hunter Valentine, Cedric Burnside, Fever Tree, Lou Ann Barton, Pete Best,, and more. Our tropically landscaped large backyard, with brick and stone patio built by Leola's husband, is a great place to relax and visit or throw a party. Plenty of free parking is available. Located in The Houston Sunset Heights neighborhood, established in the 1920's, 30's, and 40's, Dan Electro's is one block from the great Airline Farmer's Market, The terrific El Bolillo Bakery, and several very good restaurants on Airline Drive and North Main, some reflecting the Hispanic influence in the area. Several are open until midnight on weekends and a few 24 hours.
