Pat Metheny has a legendary status within the jazz music scene. It not hard to see why considering he has 3 gold records and 20 grammy awards to his name. He has toured for more than 30 years and is believed to have played between 120 & 240 concerts in each of them. Quite an accomplishment! I was first introduced to Pat Metheny as a music student myself around 15 years ago. My professor at the time was a keen jazz enthusiast. I was not the biggest fan of Jazz to be honest but there was something beautiful about Methenys music.
I saw him play live during my own time at music school. It was a tiny set the hall was dark with red and purple lights shinning onto the stage. It was an unbelievable experience as the sheer level of musicianship on display was quite remarkable. I loved the sound of his guitar; it was so soulful and smooth, he has always been a fan of the Roland GR-300 Guitar Synthesizer and he used it regularly in his music. Often its hard to believe its actually a guitar he's playing. The gig was extremely calm, most of the audience listened, many with eyes closed and let the music take them on a journey.
It was a tranquil, calm and relaxing performance. However, Pat himself was always quite animated as he played. His face tensed and staunched up with the strike of every note. Clearly very involved in his performance.
Between each piece there was a respectful round of applause, and Pat himself spoke occasionally of the music and told the audience a little about the creation or inspiration behind each piece. This was a low key but beautiful performance by a gifted musician. If you truly want to experience world class jazz, I recommend for you to go see his show.
