Biography
The band was formed by bassist Emil Gustafsson, lead singer Rasmus Flyckt, drummer Magnus Folkö, guitarist Tim Formgren and keys player Jacob William Sjöberg while each of them were still in high school together. After playing together for a couple of months, the band self-released their debut single “Urban Photograph”, which was a bigger deal than anyone could have predicted. Thanks to the track spreading through blogs all over the internet, the band were suddenly being tipped as ones to watch all over the world, and they were signed to Universal Music Group barely a year after forming as a result. With the beginnings of a world-wide following building up around them, the band released their debut EP “Our Youth” in the Fall of 2012.
The EP met the high expectations the band had built for themselves and they embarked on their first world tour in support of it, heading all over Europe and playing their first shows in the United States in January 2013. Ever since then, the band has remained one of the most exciting acts of their generation, with two hugely acclaimed albums to their name in the form of 2013's “Our Youth” and 2015's “Polaroid Memories”. Their live shows have continued to go from strength to strength as well, and in all, Urban Cone are a band that come highly recommended.
Live reviews
I’m not entirely sure what an Urban Cone is supposed to be - a traffic cone, perhaps? - but that certainly hasn’t prevented Stockholm’s band of the same name from pulling off a genuinely difficult feat in the current musical climate; crossing over into the mainstream of a genre that tends to be dominated by bands from the UK and the U.S. Since forming in 2011, they’ve carved out a reputation as one of the most exciting prospects in synthpop, thanks in large part to their consistently thrilling live shows; they take a musical style often noted for little more than its icy reserve and reinvent it for their own purposes, with frontman Emil Gustafsson a constantly gripping presence throughout and a tightness and energy to the instrumentation that sets them apart from their peers. Rapturously received tours across mainland Europe and fine reviews for debut LP Our Youth have laid the groundwork for Urban Cone, and they’ve quickly managed to make themselves staples of the European festival scene; now all they need to do is make good on that promise.
There's a lot of exciting music bubbling under the radar in Scandinavian countries lately as we see a departure from pure dance and electro and an influx of bands doing interesting things with indie and electro. Urban Cone very much sit within this category, although the name is a terrible piece of translation, their music is strong.
Both our their albums demonstrate great songwriting and a strong lyrical voice as well as an emphasis on real instrumentals. They have toured extensively through Scandinavia and parts of the UK so apart from their young appearances, you would not believe that they only formed in 2011. They are beginning to act like a bonafide rock outfit with a growing confidence in their own personalities and a confidence with the music as they develop and alter older tracks. The music definitely has a universal appeal and radio friendly tone with anthemic choruses paired to growling guitars making the whole operation suitably stadium sized. An exciting Swedish export and one to definitely keep your eye on in the following years.
