The Dirty Dozen Brass Band have reached legendary status since their formation in 1977. They originate from New Orleans, the spiritual home of jazz & blues, and currently include seven world class musicians. The origins lies in Fairview Baptist Church, where Danny Barker began a youth community project with music which quickly gained popularity within the community, little did they know this was only the beginning of their rise.
Now with fourteen albums in their discography, the band have travelled worldwide with their energetic and jovial live show which is it the epitome of what a good jazz band should be. You can hear the New Orleans influence in every incredible note played through the beautiful brass that makes audiences want to dance, jive and get involved. Their live show from the 1986 Montreux Jazz Festival, entitled 'Mardi Gras in Montreux' is a must see for anyone debating if to catch this band's show for themselves.
The Dirty Dozen are so at ease on stage and the adoration that they have for each other as musicians and the music they play in evident and infectious to any crowd who go to see them play. The band has worked with some legendary performers over the years including Elvis Costello & Joe Henry, they are now about to embark on a short residency at Vegas's Brooklyn Bowl before heading to the UK and France later in the year. I'd urge anyone who is a fan of jazz to put these dates in your calendar asap.
