Another great show- I've never been disappointed with a show when Jackie's performing (well, I guess there were a couple of times over the last decade and a half, that he didn't play long enough, but he was a guest at someone else's show.
Last night was actually a Steve Kimock and Friends show, with Steve's son on drums, Jeff Chimenti on keyboards (the Dead et al), Andy Hess on bass (Govt Mule, Black Crows), and guest Leslie Mendelson (singer/songwriter adopted onto jam scene by Bob Weir)...I was very tempted to go, but hadn't committed, until the moment it was announced that Jackie was added to be 'featured' for only the 1st of the 3-night run.
Totally blown away when Jackie walked on stage - sans Hat! (a rarity) and then the party started!.. Jackie took over and commanded the stage, with consistent/bluesy lead vocals, and alternating lead guitar riffs w/Kimock... Chimenti was on fire w/piano and organ -several times playing both simultaneously (Mendelson joined for a few songs, playing piano with Chimenti on organ)...this group seemed to feed off each other's energy, and it appeared Jackie was very surprised several times throughout the night, at how well they were communicating and how tight they sounded, ending each song as if they'd been rehearsing for weeks!
Thank you, Jackie, for comimg back 'home' to give me my Jackie fix!
Oh, and BTW, thank you for the new album, Modern Lives (and great video)!.. I've already prepurchased/pledged the CD and Poster with the teases/downloads!
Over the years, the singer/songwriter phenomenon has been booming, and unfortunately most artists are going for the same style of music and therefore not achieving the success that they desire and possibly deserve. Jackie Green however, has taken an alternative approach to the style of his singer/songwriter music by creating organic and original blues and rock music. Watching him perform live is always exciting, and seeing a multi-instrumentalist play guitar, harmonica, and sing throughout the same song is simply mind blowing and such a demonstration of his talent.
He opened the show with I Will Never Let Go, which was actually used in the film Brokeback Mountain, and he had everyone singing along straight away. The atmosphere was incredible, and the way that he commanded the audience and held us in silence in certain sections, but singing along in others was magical.
He played a really great selection of tracks from over the years, and even gave us a preview of a upcoming single which was awesome to hear performed live before a release. His charisma and stage presence match his talent, and it really was a fantastic show.
If you were going to this show just to see Jackie, you might've been a bit disappointed, as not one note came out of his mouth... however, it was pretty entertaining watching him play bass....
This was Jason Crosby's night, and Jackie obviously didn't want to steal/share the limelight...it was Jason's new album release party, and his family and friends were all there for support....
The first set was the album, which the crowd really got into...while I really enjoy Jason's keyboards and violin, it was the songs that Jackie's driving bass Tha i enjoyed most...
The second set was all-out fun, starting with Comfortably Numb, and throwing in a jammin rendition of Shakedown Street... an array of guests each taking a turn at the helm...but I think the loudest ovation was for Jason, the piano virtuoso showing off his classically trained talent, by playing Chopin! maahvelous!!
Jackie Greens is somehow improving with age!
He's coming into his own as a troubadour who rolls between his own songs and terrific covers with ease.
It was the covers that truly impressed me as his vocals and interpretive talents brought subtleties and depth to a some Grateful Dead, a Robert Hunter tribute, a fun bit of Tom Petty and Dylan's "I shall be Released" which was really special.
Least I forget to mention his amazing accompanying guitarist and wonderful bass player making a 3 piece band that filled the auditorium nicely.
All in all a very enjoyable evening.
Nobody does it better than Jackie! Fabulous show at City Winery in Boston. It's been a long time since Jackie has been around here and he was worth the wait! His voice, the lyrics, the way he composes and then re-composes his music … this kid is incredible! And Nathan Dale - he was perfection. Such a complementary guitarist and vocalist to Jackie. They were meant to play together. Pickin the banjo on Tupelo was fabulous. He can do no wrong in my book!
