MC Lars coined the phrase iGeneration, which he uses to refer to anyone born between 1982 and 2000. This term infers a love and reliance on technology that is always being perfected and improved upon year on year. As a member if the iGeneration himself it therefore makes sense that MC Lars would found the genre of post-punk laptop rap, wherein he samples punk and emo bands and improves upon their work with his hip-hop lyrics.
MC Lars is certainly a rapper with a big brain and even bigger sense of humour. His track titles often refer to great works of literature. Tracks such as “Rapbeth", "Mr. Raven" and "Ahab" are comical pokes at Shakespeare, Poe and Melville respectively. It’s not just authors’ work that MC Lars borrows from for his music, though; samples from Iggy Pop, Fugazy and Supergrass have all found their way into MC Lars’s work.
As whimsical as MC Lars might be with his reference material, an MC Lars gig is a serious deal. Prepare for tight, clean, drill-like lyrics as MC Lars drops line after line with perfect precision. In addition to his laptop samples, MC Lars usually has a band supporting him up on stage. If a club DJ, a rock star and a rapper had a baby, the result would be MC Lars. His concerts are a lot of fun and “This Gigantic Robot Kills” is definitely one to watch out for. Go see him and enjoy his work.
