Somewhat disappointed. I expected her to do SOME of her older material but none was there. No White Freightliner, no banjo and very little guitar flat picking. I understand she is promoting her own songs, which are good, but I would have liked to have seen and heard some of her great flat picking of her traditional music and her fantastic banjo picking. To me the opening act was more entertaining.
When you say bluegrass to me, I question your sanity, when you tell me it's a type of music, I begin to call medics.
That was the case when my friend said he wanted to go and see a bluegrass band called Steep Canyon Rangers perform. Very reluctantly I accepted on the basis that they had performed with Steve Martin, yes Steve Martin the legendary comedian and was told that he sometimes makes an appearance at the shows of these 6 individuals, I had to go!
The band from North Carolina, USA have many accomplishments under their belts as I had quickly learned even being awarded with entertainers of the year in 2011 by the International Bluegrasss Music Association.
Seeing this band live was very different from what I am used to as I am mainly a fan of hip hop, but I was pleasantly surprised as they were actually quite funny as I learned when they told jokes to the audience. The audience really enjoyed their performance of 'Tell The Ones I love' I actually enjoyed this myself as the sounds of the natural instruments, vibrated across the room.
As a person who had no idea what bluegrass was, I was definitely a fan after seeing this myself, I would recommend anybody to also go and watch this band perform!
I saw Sam Bush recently at the Watermelon Park Campground and was giddy with delight. The American bluegrass mandolin player is hugely talented and is considered in the music industry as the originator of the ‘Newgrass’ style. This is a sub genre of bluegrass music. His performance along with his band was a joy to see live.
His voice is typical of a Newgrass musician, country-esque, fast paced and fun. This also comes across within his vocals. His voice is straight talking and to the point which also coincides with his lyrics. Sam Bush sings about his hometown, and everyday situations. His personality is what truly makes his live shows magical, with songs such as “Circles around me” and “Howlin at he moon”.
Not only are his songwriting skills clever and musically amazing, but his mandolin playing is also awesome; they seemed effortless as he was up on stage. Sam interacts with his fans through telling little anecdotes inbetween songs describing his childhood, background of the songs which pleases his fans and here we get to see his personality better. This all makes for an awesome musical experience and one that I would highly recommend. His songs are easy listening with soft, smooth melodies.
