I have had the pleasure of seeing Béla Fleck and the Flecktones several times in concert over the last ten years. Every concert has been an incredible, rewarding experience. I do not know if a collectively more talented band exists on the planet right now.
I first saw them with Dave Matthews Band and, as hard as it is to believe, the Flecktones stole the show. They are a jazz and bluegrass fusion group, and even that description does not do them justice. They were more energetic than Dave Matthews Band and their music was like nothing I had ever heard before.
I live in Kentucky and I have seen plenty of bluegrass acts, but Béla Fleck can do things with the banjo that are truly unique. Their live shows have no special effects. The relationship between the musician and their instrument is what is important at these shows.
Just watch Béla Fleck’s hands on the banjo and you will be amazed. His fingers appear to move faster than humanly possible. They also incorporate different elements at different shows. For example, one show I saw had congas and steel drums, while another had a man from China singing along with the other musicians, who were basically playing bluegrass music to back up his vocals.
You never know what you will see at a Flecktones concert, and that is a great thing!
A great opportunity to see the original lineup and enjoy the creative interweaving of these musicians at the top of their game! Had never heard a drumitar played before. Two hours of magic and mischief in a fantastic venue just minutes from my home - the Strathmore in Montgomery County, Md.
