His virtuosic talents make Edgar Meyer's live performances to be always an exciting, awe-inspiring affair. His skills on the Double Bass are next to none, developing incredible abilities on an instrument that is not usually known for its technical difficulty, instead seen as a backing instrument. Yet Meyer proves it can be played with such gusto and ability that it can compete agains the most virtuosic violinists. Meyer straddles many different styles in his double-bass playing, travelling through classical, bluegrass and jazz, all with flair and exuberance to instantly enthral an audience. The Goat Rodeo Sessions are a recent project where Edgar Meyer's talents were able to be displayed to their full capabilities, as part of a group of equally talented musicians from across the world, playing at the Google venue in New York. Along with cellist Yo-Yo-Ma, fiddler Stuart Duncan and mandolinist Chris Thile, the group played a selection of songs that allowed their virtuosic abilities to flourish. It was awe-inspiring, not for the technical proficiency of their playing alone, but for the songs, which were a joy to listen to. The music was surprisingly accessible, despite how challenging the compositions are. Edgar Meye's playing shone out amongst his fellow musicians, laying down endless grooves and harmonic and melodic adventures that journeyed through many genres. Edgar Meyer manages to bring the Double-Bass to new musical heights, proving it can be an instrument of virtuosity and not just for the background.
