The Indie-rock god, Stephen Malkmus never disappoints when he sets foot on stage. He has wide knowledge of musical history having spent time as a former college disc jockey and his diverse influences are uniquely incorporated throughout his songs.
Malkmus is most renowned for the work he has done with his highly influential and critically acclaimed band, Pavement, but he has also participated in other side-projects that are notable. He was a former member in David Berman’s band Silver Jews, he has played in a band with Sonic Youth members Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore, and most recently he has been performing his solo material with his band the Jicks. Stephen Malkmus performs with minimal theatrics, with the exception to colorful stage lights. His performance focuses more on his songwriting capabilities and his tongue-in-cheek lyrics than having a flashy show.
Stephen Malkmus’ music is often very catchy with angular guitar riffs and interesting rhythmic patterns. His backing band provides an appropriate rhythmic foundation for him to perform his catchy guitar riffs over, and the band also helps him perform vocal harmonies that give the performance a big boost. His current setlists mostly cover songs from his band the Jicks, especially their newest album, Wig Out at Jagbags, but he has recently been including some classic Pavement songs such as “Summer Babe” and “Gold Soundz”.
Stephen Malkmus is surely regarded as a true legend in indie rock history, and to see him live clearly conveys how his talented and unconventional musical abilities have helped him garner this name.
