The Bohicas brand of garage rock isn’t the most original music out there today by a long shot, but they bring the sometimes tired genre a fresh punky energy. The minute they get onstage, they look like a band. There is a sense of shared aesthetic and camaraderie that makes watching them all the more enjoyable. With both guitarists able to deliver short, sharp, screeching solos, while the very capable rhythm section keeps the beat thundering behind them, every song is a thrill ride. A drum skin boldly proclaiming THE BOHICAS is all they use in terms of staging, with a minimum of lighting, yet they still manage to deliver an electrifying performance, with the interplay between the two guitarists being particularly thrilling to watch. Tracks like XXX and add a seedy feel to the band’s set, evoking images of the sort of small venues where the floor is sticky from too much spilt beer and you don’t really want to venture into the toilets, while the furious, pounding Swarm is a perfect set closer. The Bohicas are definitely a band to watch and have the potential to move up to bigger venues with time, a bit of luck, and more material. Signed to Domino, these guys have the potential to follow label mates such as Arctic Monkeys or Franz Ferdinand onto big things. Watch this space.
