Unlike many pop idol products, Matt Corby’s attempts to break out of his Australian Idol mould have proven relatively successively. Just one month after coming across Corby’s single Brother, I had the chance to see him live at London’s Hackney Chapel, an intimate venue where he could demonstrate his vocal prowess, corrupting even the holiest of saints.
He’s just as comfortable stripped down with a guitar or piano, as he is belting out hits like Brother and Resolution, highlighting his unique vocal range and power behind his performances. His small collection of EPs prove enough for an engaging set that’s as passionately sung as it is personally relevant to songwriter Corby. He changes up the vocalization when singing live, but his throaty choruses and high octaves undeniably keep to Corby’s style.
One thing he hasn’t left behind from his reality show days are a legion of devoted female fans infiltrating virtually every show, especially eager in his native Australia, undoubtedly a consequence of his broody persona and charming good looks.
Luckily, his devotion to his music and his passionate commitment to his performances are enough for me to forgive his Australian Idol roots. His last tour was the Resolution Tour late 2013, and he’s got nothing currently planned, but you can bet he’ll pack up the tour bus and hit the road once he’s finished working on his new album in his native Australia.
