I went to see Ricardo Villalobos, the Chilean-German minimal techno godfather, play at London’s Fabric, where he’s been a regular fixture for over 10 years now. Villalobos’ prolific recorded output stretches back to 1993, with an unrelenting stream of singles, EPs, and remixes. (I have a particular soft spot for Fizheuer Zieheuer, and high on my list of albums still to check out is his Re:ECM project with Max Loderbauer, remixing works from the ECM label). Anyway, back to Fabric. Villalobos played a lengthy and satisfying set of the upbeat minimal techno that has made him renowned. The pacing of it, the mixing, the casual forays into different ‘sub genres’ which he seems to inhabit effortlessly bear all the hallmarks that come with years of experience and relentless touring and playing live sets. The venue itself, although suited to a DJ and producer of his caliber, has always felt a bit too much like a shopping mall for clubbing for my liking. A bit too impersonal and easy to get lost in. But there was no need to go anywhere, as we stayed rooted to our place throughout Villalobos’ set. He finished off with a remix of the 70s hit ‘Todos Juntos’ by the Chilean Andean-Rock group ‘Los Jaivas’, it’s triumphant call for togetherness made for a great sendoff.
