Ying Yang Twins, featuring D-Roc (born De'Angelo Holmes, February 23,1979) and Kaine (born Eric Jackson, December 16th, 1978) broke onto the airwaves with their first single, "Whistle While You Twurk," (2000), peaking at number 17 on the US R&B/Hip-Hop Chart. Alongside extensive touring, their debut album came out later that year, titled "Thug Walkin'." Their fist-pumping tracks full of party-vibes drew the attention of A&R man Bryan Leach, which led to the duo signing to TVT Records, having already connected with Lil Jon. However, formalities were not completed before the Ying Yang Twins were to release their second record, "Alley: The Return of the Ying Yang Twins" (2002) which was instead released on Koch, achieving significant popularity with hip-hop fans in the South.
Their first record for TVT, "Me & My Brother" was released in 2003, which went on to be certified Platinum the following year, with their three hit songs "Whats Happnin!," "Naggin" and the collaborations with Lil Jon, "Salt Shaker" and "Kings of Crunk." These two tracks were massive hits that year, receiving extensive airplay and establishing both Lil Jon and the Ying Yang Twins in the Hip-Hop world, breaking into audiences outside of the American South.
Following an appearance on Britney Spears' song, "In the Zone," the duo released their next album, "United State of Atlanta (U.S.A)" (2005), which again dominated urban radio stations. Their success continued with 2006's "Chemically Imbalanced" and their legacy was compiled in 2009's "Legendary Status: Ying Yang Twins Greatest Hits" which featured all of their biggest hits.
Born on 22 January 1965 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Townes adopted the stage name DJ Jazzy Jeff, and gained an underground following for working as DJ at local parties and schools. He teamed up with Will Smith to become the duo known as DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince. Together the group received a Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance in 1989 for their single, “Parents Just Don’t Understand.” They garnered a second Grammy Award for their single “Summertime,” which also peaked at number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. In 1986 DJ Jazzy Jeff won the world DJ competition, New Music Seminar DJ Battle.
As a solo artist, DJ Jazzy Jeff recorded his first album with Sony Music in 1998, but it was necer released. It wasn’t until 2002 when he released and album entitled “The Magnificent,” andfour albums later, he followed up in 2007 with “The Return of The Magnificent.” The album featured numerous collaborations with many different artists including CL Smooth, Big Daddy Kane, Pos from De La Soul, Method Man, Rhymefest, and Raheem DeVaughn. From 2009 to 2012 he released a number of mix tape albums.
In 1990 when Smith started to branch out with his acting career for the television show, “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” Jazzy Jeff played a recurring character named Jazz. After the duo broke up, DJ Jazzy Jeff went on to become a prominent R&B, soul, and neo soul record producer. He establised the A Touch of Jazz production company in his native Philadelphia, and helped develop artists such as Jill Scott and Musiq Soul Child, Eminem, The Roots, Jewel, Darius Rucker, Talib Kweli, Floetry, and Rhymefest. In 2013 he released a web series documenting his hundreds of shows from around the world entitled “Vinyl Destination.”
Hailing for California, Petey Pablo is one of my favourite hip hop rappers of this generation. Pablo had a troubled beginning, being held in prison for five years for armed robbery, and has been in and out of custody since. His entire story is incredible, seeing as his record label producer initially discovered his talent when he was heard rapping in a nightclub bathroom. What are the chances! Let’s just hope he stays in line with the law so he can keep performing! After following his career, press coverage, and music, hearing him perform live was fantastic, he’s a true entertainer as well as a very talented man. He’s had the chance to work with some awesome producers and industry names, and my favourite of his albums, the debut Raise Up, was produced by Timbaland.
His show covered his career from those humble beginnings and raw tracks, right up to the more mainstream newer music he’s produced. It was great to see his career in a summary in a live performance. From the moment he walked out on stage he was 100% committed to his performance, and was thanking the audience for coming which was a lovely touch. Although he’s had on going encounters with the law over the years, he’s a great performer, so if you get to see him, I’d make the most of it whilst you can.
If you think that Miley Cyrus was the one who brought twerking to the spotlight, guess again.
Since 1997, the Ying Yang Twins have been making music that has inspired women (and some men) from all over to get their booties down on the floor. With seven albums and a slew of mixtapes, they’ve released a number of hit singles including ‘Salt Shaker,’ ‘Shake’ and ‘Wait (The Whisper Song).’ And they’re still making music now with themed mixtapes like ‘Twurk or Die,’ which they released in 2013, and even dedicated an entire track to the ‘We Won’t Stop’ singer that is appropriately titled, ‘Miley Cyrus. With all these ass shaking songs, clearly catching them live is one big crazy party. Usually packing a nightclub, there are so many people that one would think that such dancing would not exist. However, these people make it happen and some even make it onto the Ying Yangs stage. The two are usually casually dressed but are carrying so much swagger that you can’t help but get into everything they say. Obviously a Ying Yang Twins show is not for the faint of heart. If you’re easily offended by overtly sexual banter and the gyrating movements that seem to surround people at these gigs, it might be best to sit this one out. But if you’re all into having wilding out and having a laugh, then the Ying Yang Twins are a hip hop duo not to be missed.
Unless you lived under a rock in the late 80s/early 90s, you definitely know DJ Jazzy Jeff, or just Jazz from The Fresh Prince of Bel Aire. The American hip hop and R&B disc jockey, record producer, turntablist and actor had a lot of success making music with The Fresh Prince (Will Smith) and once they parted ways, Jazzy Jeff continued to perform as a solo act. He still travels internationally to give his fans the show that they deserve.
Due to his long time popularity, he still draws a pretty large crowd of fans to his DJ sets. His table of equipment is very simple and straightforward, with his computer in the middle and two turntables on each side. Watching him do his thing is completely mesmerizing. His hands move so meticulously, and the concentration and flow of his connection with the music and knowing exactly when to scratch. He makes it look like absolutely no effort whatsoever, yet the music is multi-faceted. He plays a variable playlist of song types, which appeals to a large group of fans. It is pretty cool to watch one of your favorite television personalities and witness their first hand talent and artistry.
