Having always had a love of hip hop, Peters decided to try pursuing a career as a rapper after graduating from Wells High School, focusing on developing his rhyming talents and lyrical flow. He released his first record in 2007, self-releasing the album, "Preposterously Dank." The album injected a sense of humor into the raps, making it stand out from the crowd.
In January 2010, he released his single, "I'm Awesome," from his mixtape, "We Smoked it All," released later that year. The single received significant airplay on Maine, US radio stations, before attracting the attention of Universal Republic Records, with Spose signing a deal with them a month after his single was released. Now with the backing of a major label, Spose's track, "I'm Awesome" peaked at number 37 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming a hit across the nation. The track was praised for its self-deprecating humor and gained many fans. It went on to be certified Gold in the US.
Spose continued to release further mixtapes, with his next being "We Smoked It All Vol. 2" A full length album, "Happy Medium" came out shortly after, initially posted online for free streaming on his Facebook page, before later being released in physical form in Bull Moose Music stores in December 2010.
His third album, "The Audacity!" came out in April 2012, featuring the single, "Pop Song." The album was released on ITunes. The album failed to match the success of his first single, prompting Spose to create a kick-starter campaign to raise funds in order for him to continue making music. The fundraiser was successful, with the music allowing for the free release of his Outkast inspired "Dankonia" and compilation album "The Yard Sale" to be released in 2013. His following mixtape, "The Peter Sparker Mixtape" was released as a free download in June 2013.
It’s fitting that Maine rapper Spose’s most popular song to date is titled ‘I’m Awesome’. With no need for false modesty, Spose has used a firm sense of self-belief to steer his career through its ups and downs and this has resulted in a live show that oozes confidence. He draws the crowd into his performance, with them unable to resist his cocky charm, instantly converting new fans whilst thriving off the loyal ones as they sing along to every word of his songs.
Given his strong personality, its surprising that one of the most unique and exciting aspects of his shows are who he chooses to surround himself with. His backing band features everything from horns and pianos to drums and bass with little bit of vocal thickness coming from his hypeman and backing singer. It’s a varied cast which only makes sense as they begin to play and transform his songs into warm compositions that were born for the stage. He enjoys playful onstage banter with his band and affirms the belief that as long as Spose feels that ‘he’s awesome’ everyone around him will too. Check him out live and try feeling awesome about yourself too.
