Starting life in the Dominican Republic Lewis Jr. was raised in Florida and his earliest exposure to music was signing in his church choir. Shortly after he started listening to Bob Dylan, Boyz II Men, Bobby Brown and The Beatles from which his inspiration for making music blossomed and in 2000 he moved to Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.
With his band punk band Mad Man Films, alongside fellow musicians Joseph Ciampini on drums and Zak Longo on bass, the band made two independent releases that remained relatively under the radar. As well as this he created compositions for touring dance and theatre productions. Although not satisfied with this output Lewis Jr. moved to Bushwick, Brooklyn, U.S., and started his Twin Shadow project.
Twin Shadow’s debut album “Forget” was released November 15, 2010 and was notably produced by Grizzly Bear’s Chris Taylor in Brooklyn, New York. The album received positive reviews across the board with Pitchfork Media rating it an impressive 8.4 and placed it at No. 26 on their “Top 50 Albums of 2010”. The sound of the album has been identified as chillwave, featuring the closeness and personal touch of early R&B with the synth inspired textures and tones of 80’s new wave, along with well-thought out lyrics.
2012’s follow-up album title “Confess” was received with much the same critical acclaim as his first. Self-produced this time, the album focuses on the reality of Lewis Jr.’s life, a motorcycle accident he was involved in in Boston, U.S., his changing relationships, and features a strong focus on the present, with a more pop-inspired groove than “Forget”
The success of his albums has seen the musician on the international festival circuit including sets at Coachella, Sasquatch, Primavera, Bonnaroo and perform on shows such as Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and Conan.
George Lewis Jr., a.k.a. Twin Shadow, is well renowned for presenting his drenched in 80’s style of music, but he manages to create his own interpretation of the style of music that has influenced him rather than replicating it.
Twin Shadow tours with a very competent and talented backing band consisting of a drummer, bass player, and keyboard player. When performing live Twin Shadow conveys intense energy. The bass playing is jumping all over the fret board with the kind of punch you would expect to hear from such new wave bands as Duran Duran or New Order. George Lewis’ electric guitar is saturated in dense chorus effects, which helps present a shimmering style of guitar playing through his sparkling riffs. The band’s dynamic chemistry is perfect. The bass line is grooving to the rhythm, while the guitar is played in an angular style bouncing off the rhythm in a ping-pong type fashion to the sound of the lead synth. Although the musical instrumentation creates a powerful sound, George Lewis’s vocals are the driving force behind the music that really gives the sound its strength.
The band is always full of energy when they play live. They are grooving out to the music and dancing back and forth on stage to the rhythm. George gets really excited when breaking out into a guitar solo by bending his head back and entrancing himself into the music somewhat similar to something Prince would do. Bright colorful lights wash over the stage and flash rapidly to the intense parts of the songs allowing the theatrics to help enhance their amazing performance.
The crowd is sure to have a great time at a Twin Shadow performance dancing to the 80’s inspired music that is re-created through such great songs as “Forget” and “Patient”.
