Williams’ earliest musical excursion was playing organ in his school church when he was five, and later learning to play guitar at DJ age 14. Initially inspired by the likes of Peter Heller, Armand Van Helden and Daft Punk, before coming around to the slower and more considered style of J Dilla. In 2010 Star Slinger released his debut album “Volume 1”, introducing the DJ's style of sampling short clips and crafting brand of dance with handfuls of soul. The album was followed up by a pair of EPs in 2011 “Rogue Cho Pa” and “Teams”, both of which earned the producer significant attention from the music press.
In addition to his original material, Star Slinger has a talented proclivity towards remixing indie-rock and pop artists including Jessie Ware, Gold Panda, Washed Out, Daedelus, Toro y Moi, and Broken Social Scene. Star Slinger has also made a name for himself for his extensive worldwide touring schedule that has seen the DJ play at some of the world’s most respected and revered venues.
Featured as one of Spin’s Top New Artists exposed the producer to a new host of audiences and Williams subsequently released the EP “Bedroom Joints”, the single “Chain Dumbin” featuring Juicy J & Reggie B, and, ahead of his sophomore full-length the single “Free” in 2013. Uploaded to Williams’ Bandcamp page for free download, Star Slinger released “IV”, an EP consisting exclusively of edits and samples of the artists Antia Baker, Erykah Badu, Sade and Ella Fitzgerald.
There’s something really quite electrifying about the talent of a quality DJ and producer, and Star Slinger has that magic to his music. It’s evident in his success as well, through his collaborations with huge artists such as Washed Out, The Go! Team, and loads more big names. He only started self releasing his mix tapes of his sets in late 2010, so in 4 short years, he’s come a long way and had much to show for his commitment.
In 2011, the Guardian quoted him ‘Best new act of the year’, and I knew I had to get the chance to see him live. The club was full to the brim, people were almost spilling out of the doors to get to see the master. He brought the house down frm the moment he started working the decks, to the last mix he played. As well as showcasing tracks from his album, he did some new live mixes which was incredible to see unfold before you! He also put vocals on top of some tracks which was epic to experience. It was a great atmosphere and the sheet talent was refreshing. I’ll definitely be seeing Star Slinger again soon.
