Deriving their name from a character in the 1974 film “Dark Star”, Pinback was formed as a part time side-project of former Three Mile Pilot member Armistead Burwell Smith IV and former Thingy member Rob Crow. Pinback’s earliest recordings, made on Smith's home computer, were recorded with Three Mile Pilot drummer Tom Zinsor and featured a host of audio samples from the “Dark Star” film. With the band’s debut self-titled album hotly tipped as one of the finest indie-pop records of the year, a bidding war ensued that led the album to be stuck in limbo for nearly a year because of contractual disagreements.
After eventually singing with Ace Fu Records, “Pinback” was finally released in 1999 to critical acclaim in the music press. Building on the crafted and considered approach of their debut, Pinback's subsequent release, the “Some Voices” EP, once again earned rave reviews, and cemented the band’s position as complex indie-rockers. Leaving all reminiscence of rock and roll behind, Pinback’s sophomore album “Blue Screen Life” was issued in 2001.
The band’s next release “Summer in Abaddon”, marked a move away from Ace Fu, and was released by Touch and Go Records in 2004. The album was the first of the bands to chart on the Billboard 200, reaching No. 196. Pinback’s expansive collection of unreleased material and demos titled “Nautical Antique” found its release in 2006, followed by the album of new material “Autumn of the Seraphs” in 2007. After a five year hiatus, Pinback returned in 2012 to issue “Information Retrieved”, which charted at No. 71 on the Billboard 200.
Pinback are masters at layering deep sonic sounds together to create the perfect blend of catchiness. Main songwriters, Zach Smith and Rob Crow, alternate back and forth between singing lead vocals on the songs they have written, while the other member harmonizes to enhance the performance.
Zach and Rob’s dynamics on stage are impeccable. Zach has a unique and intricate way of playing the bass, which involves strumming it like a guitar and playing complicated, melodic riffs. While Zach is playing intricate riffs on his bass, Rob is playing carefully crafted licks on his guitar that give each song an edge. Both Zach and Rob’s singing styles are often subdued and are used more as a form of instrumentation that creates an atmospheric sound. Zach also adds to Pinback’s elaborate soundscape by playing keyboards on such favorite tunes like, “Sender”. The band is also joined by a drummer, who holds down the rhythm while Zach and Rob play their catchy leads.
The stage is usually darkly lit at a Pinback concert, allowing for short experimental films to be projected on the screen behind the band. The films projected on the screen have very little continuity, but are vital in helping enhance the emotions of the songs performed. Rob and Zach seem very into their music when they perform live. Rob especially seems like a chilled-back sort of dude when on stage, creatively having installed a cup holder on his microphone stand as a place of rest for all the beer he consumes on stage. The more beer Rob consumes while performing, the more enthusiastic he begins to act while playing. Pinback has an extensive list of great songs they perform live spanning their entire career. The year 2014 marks the 10th year anniversary of Pinback’s revered album, Summer in Abaddon, so on their most recent tour you can expect to hear most of the classics from this great album. Pinback will also be reissuing Summer in Abaddon on maroon vinyl and will be selling it at their shows. Just another reason to catch them live.
