Sometimes I do wish I was born in the 70's. The 60's and 70's are the best decades of music for me. The most influential, fresh sounding and most powerful in their messages, sounds and live shows. Sure we are privileged with the amazing spectrum of lighting shows which didn't exist back then, but live shows were so raw and natural. One of the forefronts of live performing in the 70's were New Riders of the Purple Stage- clues in the name.
They were actually active in 1969 but their career rocketed in the 70's. Performing country blues and grabbing a sour psychedelic lemon and squeezing it on their tunes, they created a breath-taking new sound. They were really popular in America because of this and still are to this day.
They weren't shy of talking during intervals between songs, which even some of the greatest live performers struggled with. This made everything less tense, and made the audience feel more at one with the band. They always played with a smile on their faces too which seems unnatural in this day of gigging, out of character as it were. But I like the playing with smiles on your faces 'look.'
They are one of the few bands keeping bluegrass music alive. They are certainly doing this in their home country and I hope they tour in the UK so the bluegrass genre can grow and blossom in the UK.
