Born of Moroccan-Berber descent, Loreen’s rise to popularity came after appearing in the 2004 season of Swedish Idol. The singer reached the eighth round of the show performing songs by Alicia Keys, Stevie Wonder, Andy Williams, and the Police, after which she presented the TV show “Lyssna”. After taking a small hiatus from on-screen roles, Loreen participated in the 2011 Melodifestivalen competition eventually placing in fourth. Co-written by Moh Denebi and Björn Djupström, Loreen’s single from the show “My Heart is Refusing Me”, peaked at No. 9 on the Swedish Singles Chart.
The singer reentered the competition the following year with her single “Euphoria” and ultimately won the grand prize of representing Sweden at the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest. After performing the same single on the show Loreen and Sweden won the competition, raising the signer’s profile to new heights. The single went on to peak at No. 3 on the UK Singles Chart, and helped Loreen maintain a presence in the UK.
Released in October 2012, Loreen’s debut full-length album topped the Sverigetopplistan Albums Top 60 (Swedish Album Chart), and was certified platinum in its second week of release. The album earned strong reviews from critics and features the singles “Euphoria”, “My Heart Is Refusing Me”, “Crying Out Your Name”, “In My Head”, and “We Got the Power”. Later in 2012 the singer won the MTV Europe Music Award for Best Swedish Act as well as two Rockbjörnen Awards for Best Female Artist and Best Song (“Euphoria”). Loren supported the album with an extensive promotional tour of Europe before travelling to Japan, Australia, and Russia in the 2013. In 2014 the singer performed as a part of the Art on Ice tour, which combines live music with figure skating across Scandinavia.
Watching Loreen perform live in front of a large, cheering crowd was a wonderful concert to behold. Put simply, there's a reason that Loreen was Sweden's choice for the Eurovision contest and won.
Her vocals are absolutely incredible to hear, and hearing her sing live is an experience that will make your spine tingle. To the backdrop of a band full of pulsating drums and musicians, Loreen stands in a long, simple grey dress, her black hair swaying back and forth as she skips around the stage, joyously performing her hit song "Euphoria." The audience is wild, full of people from all stretches of life, clearly excited to be in the presence of such an extraordinary performer. Audience members, myself included, jump up and down, scream, and cheer. Some even carry signs with her name on them, showing their adoration. At one point, Loreen even joins in with the drummer, beating on the drum with a stick, beating out her own passion, her own joy for music so evident in her stage performance.
"Euphoria" is a song that's easy enough to dance to as it is, but Loreen's infectious performance truly pushes this song over the top, and by the end of the performance, nearly everyone was on their feet, screaming, and cheering like children at a circus.
