Maysa has been singing all her life, declaring at the tender age of 6 that she wanted to become a singer. And this is what she has done, having enjoyed a career for over ten years, releasing eleven albums becoming a well-established jazz and soul singer. Born in Baltimore, Maysa relocated to London in 1992, joining the already established British jazz/funk band Incognito. From their her vocal talents gained recognition and she eventually went solo, releasing her debut in 1995.
Her performance at the Jazz Cafe in London this year provided the perfect opportunity to check out her rich, dynamic voice, which reverberated around the venue. The backing band were equally talented, with tasty harmonies from the backing vocalists and heavy grooves from the rhythm section. It was an incredibly tight performance that flowed seamlessly throughout. "Hypnotic Love" was a highlight, as was her version of "Day N Night" which had a distinct disco feel to it. The songs were lively and foot-tappingly danceable, making it hard to resist rising from my seat and joining in with the grooving. Maysa definitely has one of the best voices in the world of jazz and is a true talent that should not be missed.
