Peter Bjorn and John

It’d probably be easy to dismiss Peter Bjorn and John as some kind of indie one-hit wonders - if there is such a thing - after their infuriatingly catchy ‘Young Folks’ (if you can’t remember the words, you could certainly whistle the tune) embedded itself in brains everywhere back in 2006. In fact, though, there’s much more to them than just that one song; Bjorn Yttlng is a renowned producer, having sat behind the desk on Lykke Li’s Wounded Rhymes and I Never Learn, whilst the band have collaborated with Drake and opened for Depeche Mode in the years since their breakthrough. After they returned to a straightforward pop sound with their most recent record, 2011’s Gimme Some, they re-calibrated their live show accordingly; they don’t bring any additional help with them on the road, keeping it to just the core trio, and have begun to focus primarily on the sharper, more upbeat side of their sound. Their sets are tight, lively affairs - although they’ve been known to indulge in the occasional inter-song jam - and, tellingly, they tend to drop ‘Young Folks’ into the thick of their tracklists, these days; they’ve enough confidence in the rest of their material that they don’t feel the need to afford their best-known song any undue prominence.
