I always have high hopes for indie rock bands and their performances, but I was not sure if the same standard could be applied to a group from Bavaria. It is definitely not that I thought it somehow made them an inferior band or anything like that obviously, I just did not know how much experience Sportfruende Stiller had playing in front of huge crowds early in their formation.
Sometimes groups that do not start up with big performances from day one struggle to adapt, but these worries were quickly put to rest at the concert.They kicked things off by dimming down the lights until it was almost pitch black, then started some of the music to work the crowd up slowly but surely. As it picked up you could feel the tension rising, until the lights started flickering on, and eventually they came on full blast with the band on stage.
They had some cool letters in the background spelling out the band name, but more importantly than all of the gimmicks, they had a great stage presence and sound. The music sounded a lot more personal and fun here than in recordings, and they looked really comfortable up there playing. I was surprised by how fancy the show was quite frankly, but it still felt very authentic so was extremely enjoyable.
