Orphy Robinson put together a magical and spiritual ensemble to take us through a delightful rendition of Van Morrison’s seminal ‘Astral Weeks’ album from way back in 1968
Remarkably Van Morrison only knew the flautist John Payne prior to the recording of the original album in New York and the band otherwise comprised jazz musicians
An ideal scenario for Orphy to simulate!
Orphy orchestrated the work and led the band whist playing marimba, bongos and associated percussion instruments
Joe Sang took the vocals brilliantly, in his own style, wisely as no one can really match Van the Man. He was ably supported by Sahra Gure on backing vocals
Other musicians (not always as billed) included
Kate Shortt – female vocals, cello
Mark Mondesir - drums, percussion
Rowland Sutherland – flute
Best surprise of the evening was the addition of John Etheridge (Grappelli, Soft Machine) on guitar
The sound system was terrific and the DJ chose his music excellently
