Biography
Influenced by his parent’s record collection at a young age, Joe Diffie started singing age three and made his first musical performance in his aunt’s country music band age four. Throughout the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, Diffie had been a member of bands including a gospel quartet and later the bluegrass band, the Special Edition. After Hank Thompson had recorded and released “Love on the Rocks”, a song written by Diffie, the songwriter moved to Nashville, Tennessee, U.S., where he worked at the Gibson guitar plant.
Around this Diffie became a highly sought after demo singer, continued to write songs and collaborated with Holly Dunn on the single “There Goes My Heart Again” in 1989. In 1990 Diffie signed with Epic Records who issued the singer-songwriter’s debut album “A Thousand Winding Roads”. The album spawned two No. 1 country chart singles “If the Devil Danced (In Empty Pockets)” and “Home”, as well as two No. 2 singles “If You Want Me To” and “New Way (To Light Up an Old Flame”.
Diffie’s sophomore album “Regular Joe”, released in 1992 was a similarly ballad-driven record, and cemented the singer as a staple of the country music chart. The singer’s subsequent album however, “Honkie Tonk Attitude” (1993), covered a more expansive musical ground and was noted for its humourous elements. The album proved to be Diffie’s most successful and paved the way for his fourth full-length “Third Rock From the Sun”, which spawned the No. 1 singles “Pickup Man” and “Third Rock From the Sun” in 1994.
The popular singer-songwriter subsequently released the Christmas album “Mr. Christmas” in 1995, along with his fifth studio album “Life’s So Funny”, “Twice Upon a Time” in 1997, and “A Night to Remember” in 1999. Diffie has continued to record and release music into the new millennium and has toured in support of the albums “In Another World” (2001), “Tougher Than Nails” (2004), “Homecoming: The Bluegrass Album” (2010), and “All in the Same Boat” (2013).
Live reviews
Joe Diffie, the country music singer from America, is well known for his many ballads and novelty songs. He has five number one singles from his debut release and another 12 top ten singles and 40 hits on the same chart to top that off. He has released 7 albums during his career as well as a rather festive Christmas album. His most recent album to date is the 'Homecoming: The Bluegrass' album, which you may have heard before from 2010. Music was built into him, his family coming from a very musical background, which is very common with country singers. His first performance was at 4 years old in a country music band ran by his aunty, I don't suppose every 4 year olds could say they’ve that. He actually starting to go down the academic route by studying medicine at University, but after earning his degree he decided to drop it and follow a different path, which eventually lead him to music. He is your typical country singer, down to the guitar and the cowboy hat. But you can't help but feel personally involved with his songs when he's live on stage. He knows how to engage an audience and I really connected with his lyrics, it's almost like he's singing to you on one your own in some ways. A very talented man, I've never been a huge country fan but seeing him perform live has unexpectedly changed my mind of the genre.
Joe Diffie is a country musician perhaps best known for his balladic qualities which is pretty unusual for a genre known for often being upbeat in tempo. This is not to say that the show is not fun in its own way as Joe successfully merges the slower tracks with the honky tonk inspired sounds of his later discography.
The Oklahoma musician has gained a loyal following since he began on the circuit way back in the early 90s and it seems like there could be attendees of his very first gigs here this evening. He thanks the fans old and new for coming out and listening to him play before promising one hell of a show as his band begins the twangy instrumental introduction of 'Third Rock From the Sun'. Tonight is mainly about the hits which keep the energy levels high yet he takes time to honour one of his personal country influences Johnny Cash with a great cover of 'Folsom Prison Blues'. They quickly end with 'Prop Me Up Beside the Jukebox (If I Die)' and leave to huge cheers from the grateful crowds.
Venue had a great atmosphere. All 3 singers interacted with each other very well and kept the audience entertained. However, each one only sang 4 songs each and event was over in less than 2 hours. Tickets were billed for 8pm to 11pm. 3 top singers from the 90s, and we walked out feeling cheated with such a short performance.
We were a group of 7 to see Joe at 8 Seconds Saloon. We a a really fun night out. Joe played ALL his classic songs you would want him to play. Super good stage presence. There’s still just something people like about A Pickup Man!
