The venue was perfectly befitting a band like The Dig, the up and coming rock outfit from New York. At the Silverlake Lounge in Los Angeles, the dark venue was lit up with swirling lights from a crystal ball, with a rainbow of colours projected upon the stage, illuminating the band consisting of David Baldwin (guitar/vocals), Emile Mosseri (bass/vocals), Eric Eiser (keyboards/guitar) and Mark Demiglio (drums). Their music has a distinct, retro feel, alluding to the psychedelia of the 60s. Although there are certainly post-punk influences, with their use of reverb and echo sounding as if they are channeling the eerie, gothic vibes of Joy Division and Robert Smith's The Cure. The band have released two full-length albums and two EP's so far, with the latest release being the EP "You & I." They are slowly developing an eager following, with their show providing evidence that they have talent in abundance. Their laid back riffs, with swirling effects and striding bass lines make for a tantalising performance, finding myself nodding profusely along with their set. Favourite song was "Black Water," with its slow, heavy groove that was driven along with a sense of understated energy, culminating in a tasty guitar break over the pounding rhythm section. The Dig were a joy to listen to and worthwhile taking a listen.
This band is so outrageously talented! I saw The Dig live at the Teragram Ballroom— blew me away. It was everything I had hoped to hear and see— even better live. One of the best bands out there, right now. Every single song on each album is an absolute, creative masterpiece. The lyrics are so artistic and cleverly written as are the melodies. The sound is soulful and complex, but also super chill. I first fell in love with “Midnight Flowers,” then, “Bloodshot Tokyo.” I keep falling in love with everything they write.
This band is amazing. All the members are clearly talented, and I especially enjoy the magic in Daniel Baldwin's and Emile Mosseri's voices.
The Dig has quickly become one of my favorite bands. I first saw them when they opened for She Wants Revenge in 2016. They made such a big impression that I was interested in seeking out their catalog. I'm glad I did. Wow!
If you're into energetic psych-pop meets dreamy shoegaze, you'll love this band.
