Over the course of a career that lasted some twenty-one years, Powderfinger carved out a reputation as one of Australia’s premier rock bands, both in terms of their fanbase and the commercial success that they enjoyed. In 1998, they tasted their first number one record in their native country, Internationalist, and indeed it was an aptly-titled effort; it would go on to launch the band onto the world stage, and by the time album number four rolled around in September of 2000, they’d secured a cult following in the Western world, too, as well as continuing to expand their home base; the album, Odyssey Number Five, went eight times platinum in Australia. Their blend of topical lyrics - which often tackled the politics of their homeland - and energetic, play-it-loud guitar approach meant that their live shows were often thrilling affairs, with both their emotionally-charged approach and aggressive sound making the hairs on the back of the audience’s neck stand up. They continued to mix up their setlists and the sonic approach right up until 2010, when they disbanded for no other reason than wanting to go out on top; that they did, too, playing to tens of thousands each night on a farewell tour of Australia.
